Fast Track Multi Engine Piston Rating 2 Days
The Multi Engine Piston Rating (MEP) is aimed at pilots who wish to fly professionally and potentially earn a living from a flying career, or for those who just wish to experience better performance and safety from two engines instead of one! Pilots can take additional courses to enable them to apply for jobs as Flying Instructors or Airline Pilots.
Pre-course entry requirements
• Hold a JAR PPL or CPL
• Have at least 70 hours flying experience as PIC
So what is Fast Track?
You will undertake the course on an intensive basis flying anywhere from 3 to 5 hours per day depending on you. Experience has shown us that the learing and retention rates increase dramatically when training is conducted in this manner. You will have one instructor and one aircraft for the duration of the course. We also find this helps enormously as you do not have to spend valuable time getting to know the minor differences between aircraft, not to mention having to put up with lots of different instructors! We will aslo ensure that an examiner is available immediately after completing your course to ensure you get your licence with minimum fuss.
The Course
The aim of this JAA approved MEP modular course is to train pilots to enable them to pass a MEP skills test in a complex multi-engine piston aircraft. Upon completion of the course, the pilot will be able to apply for a Multi-Engine Class Rating (MEP). Training is provided using a complex CESSNA 310 aircraft.
7 Hours theoretical ground training multi-engine operations
6 Hours multi-engine (VFR) CESSNA 310 + skill test
Course duration: 2-3 days
Prior to each flight throughout the course you will have a detailed pre-flight brief with your instructor, who will go through each element of the exercise. After the flight, there will be a thorough debrief, when you will be encouraged to discuss the flight with your instructor and when he/she will answer any questions you may have.
Practical Tests
The MEP Rating involves one 'Skills' test consisting of 2 distinct parts:
General handling:
This consists of basic and steep turns, flying slowly & stalling, circuits (taking off & landing in different configurations).
Assymetric Flight & Emergency Procedures:
Learning to handle a twin with a failed engine is a crucial part of the training, so much so that
the majority of the 6 hour course is devoted to this section.
The test itself is merely a demonstration of the flying skills acquired during training. You will not be asked to demonstrate anything which has not been taught during the training. It is very similar to a PPL skills test, but you are expected to perform the manoeuvres to a higher standard and demonstrate superior knowledge to PPL through both pre-flight planning and airmanship.
Initially, many people are apprehensive about the test, but you should relax. Our examiners are highly qualified and experienced 'FRIENDLY' people who know what they are looking for. They are not trying to catch you out. Treat the test like any other flight and you will find that it is an enjoyable experience...especially when you here the word 'congratulations'!
Medical Examination
All pilots must have a Class 1 or 2 Medical conducted by a CAA authorised medical practitioner. You can see a current list of names and addresses of AME’s (authorised medical examiners) at the CAA’s Safety Regulation Group website under the section 'personnel licensing'. Check out the web links page on our site for the address.
Theory (Ground) Examinations
There is one theory examination (multiple choice) to be passed on 'Multi Engine' aircraft. The theory training is conducted as part of the course and you will sit the examination prior to the practical Skills Test.
